FIFA have confirmed the official dates on which the 2022 FIFA World Cup will be held in Qatar, according to Sky Sports.
The date on which the 2022 FIFA World Cup final will be held, ie December 18, was fixed six months before they decided the start date.
The reason for choosing 18 December as the date for the World Cup final as it is Qatar's National Day. Also, the 2022 World Cup will be four days shorter, compared to the usual 32-day World Cup.
The confirmed 2022 Qatar World Cup dates: November 21 to December 18.
It has been difficult for Qatar since the time they won the bid for the 2022 World Cup.
Corruption Allegations:
The major problem that Qatar faced was allegations of bribery to win the bid for 2022 World Cup. Raising many eyebrows, Qatar won the staging rights in 2010 beating bids from Australia, the United States, South Korea and Japan. It was followed by the corruption allegations, which were always denied by the Qatar bidding committee. It is reported that Qatar paid $3 million to FIFA officials to support their World Cup bid. Later, an inquiry was ordered to look into these allegations headed by independent ethics investigator Michael Garcia. However, Qatar were cleared of 'corruption' allegations which occurred during the bidding process.
Temperature Problems:
Followed by the corruption allegations, things didn't go well for Qatar as FIFA officials expressed their concern regarding the temperatures in Qatar during summer.
With temperatures going as high as 45 C during the day in Qatar in summers, many officials came up with the opinion of shifting the dates of 2022 World Cup from June-July to November-December.
In 2014, UEFA president Michel Platini suggested that the 2022 World Cup should be held in winter and not in summer.
Qatar offcicals stated that they would build football stadiums with cooling facilities for players and fans, making the temperature favourable for players and fans. It was reported that the stadiums would harness solar energy, which would be converted into electricity to provide power for the stadium cooling facilities. Despite promising cooling facilities in stadiums, such system has never been tested and Qatar officials have not been able to guarantee this facility.
Chilean journalist Harold Mayne-Nicholls suggested that the matches for the 2022 FIFA World Cup should start as late as '1:00 am' to avoid sweltering Qatar heat. After thorough discussion, FIFA finally confirmed that the 2022 World Cup will be held in November and December of 2022 to avoid high temperatures during summer.
This will be the first time ever that a FIFA World Cup will be held in November and December.
